Portfolio Task 5

Overseas residents visiting Australia annual from 1975 to 2005

The given line graph illustrates information on the number of overseas visitors travelling to Australia in millions of people. Overall, one notable trend seems to be that Australia has steadily become more popular as a destination spot. For example, there were 20 million more visitors to Australia in 2005 than in 1975. That's a jump from 10 million to 30 million in 20 years.

The second table gives statistics showing the countries whose residents went to Australia between 1975 and 2005. In both years, the largest number of visitors came from Japan, followed by South Korea and Europe. Britain, the United States and China also had many people traveling to Australia in these years. In fact, the number of people visiting Australia grew in every one of these countries. For example, in 2005, 12 million people went there from Japan compared with only 3.2 million in 1975.

In conclusion, we can see from the line graph a big change from 1975 to 2005; there was an increase of more than 20 million visitors. Also, the statistics table reports the highest visitors are from Japan and the lowest China.

Portfolio Task 4

Competition

Teaching children using correct ways is very important for their future life. Some parents and teachers think that it is more important to show kids how to fight for their place in life. Another opinion is that the most important skill is to be able to work together with other people. I will discuss these two opinions.

Competition makes people work harder to reach their goals. If there is a limited number of places in university, only the best students will get those places. For example, you can only get into some universities if your GPA score is not less than 3.5 over 4.0. So, competition is a good thing when it is used for good reasons.

Cooperating is necessary for people in some situations. When you need to do some complicated job fast, it is important to have a good command of skilled people
who are used to doing that kind of job together. For example, if you have to develop a big software project, you need to have a group of developers with good professional and team skills .Teaching children to be a part of the team will help them to get skills for their future work.

In conclusion, it is very important for children to become team players. It is also important for them to be able to win. So, both of those skills are important in different situations. I think that to be part of the team is more important than competition skills, because you need to work with other people more often than to compete with them, unless you are a professional.
